Default Homemade Tools Oil Fill Pipe Puller

This is a tool I've thought about making for years, and I finally got around to it this week. I've seen hammer and chisel marks from people trying to remove the oil fill pipe, and I've even read where someone suggests tapping the pipe back and forth as you pull. This is a good way to distort the bottom end and always have a loose fitting pipe.

You need to use a slide hammer and pull straight out to maintain a good tight fit. I used a 3 1/2" aluminum square block, just because it was what I had handy. It could have been a little smaller, then I wouldn't have had to taper the edge facing the block for clearance. I used my hole saw to cut the pipe hole first, then drilled the two holes for the bolts, then used my band saw to cut it in half. I then drilled and tapped two 1/4" - 20 holes for the crossbar, which fastens to the puller by a 3/8" bolt.

I also made a snug fitting plug for the pipe. Even though this probably isn't needed it does give the pipe good support to make sure it isn't distorted by the clamping. You can see wrench or chisel marks all over this pipe from someone's previous attempts at pulling the pipe out.

Tom,
I like this, good job! I was just out in the garage looking at the motor I will be putting in my car in a week or so. I am using all the greasy parts of my old engine on the "new" one...oil pan oil fill pipe and so on. I want it to look like it is the same old grubby thing. I will be making one of these to get the oil fill pipe out hopefully not disturbing too much of the patina.....its a sickness..I am the only one who will know...but you know I will be looking at it more than anyone else.

Good job, Tom !

I reckon a variation can be made from hardwood for those folks who don't have the metal-working capabilities.

Thanks,
Yes 3/4" Oak supported with flat washers should work fine, but I only used a drill press and band saw to make this.

The rear brake camshaft that the brake shoe cam slides through is just a tad bit larger than the base of the oil filler pipe. It can be turned down a few thousands on a lathe to fit and works great.

That's what I use. I just used my belt sander to grind a little off until it just fit.

I have a Starrett set of hole saws and used the 1 1/2" for this cut. I was surprised at how well they cut through thick aluminum.

I've used a rear brake camshaft for years to push the fill pipe up when the oil pan is off the engine, but I needed to make this remover to use when the oil pan is still installed.

Tom, my dad made a neat oil fill pipe extractor out of simple cast pipe. It is so easy to use and is so simple. I've been going to send it into the two national clubs, but just haven't had time to take photos and write it up. I will take some pictures of it and send them to you. It takes no machining just a little cutting of the pipes.

i did not take it that he was changing the original Ford filler pipe, but rather, the 'cast pipe' he was referring to

Not modifying anything. It is a great stand alone puller with a hammer puller on it and it pulls the pipe out without any damage and takes a minute to put it around the pipe and tighten it up. Pictures soon

2016 054.jpgI hope these come through and show the pipe extractor my dad made. It is simple and made from pipe he had from our old fuel oil tank. I think they were fill pipes.

I like the pipe idea also. I assume the split pipe is 1 1/2" ID.

Yes, remember the 250 gal fuel oil tanks we all had in our basements (Wis)? They had a fill tube to the outside and then a whistle pipe to tell the filler it was getting full? That's the pipe he used. I had a box of pipes when my dad died and kept it not knowing what he was using them for. Then I got out the oil tube tool (which he made one for each of us) and realized that's what it was is all the parts to put this oil tube extractor together. So I now have a box of caps and pipe from his supply.
