Hey Ron - not sure how anybody is going to be able to help you unless they actually degree the profile of the cam in an engine with a crank, rod and piston installed? If you want me to do that, I can . . .

B&S, yes, I agree. However, I just asked for the size of the base circle and the grose lift. To compare it with my cam. I'm quite sure it is a 400jr as I used several during my builds and these numbers look familiar I didn't think it would get this complicated. On another note: have you ever thought that the torque output of na engine followed the airflow of the intake, and big displacement flatheads loose their torque at a lower RPM??

Ron, the base circle dimension can be somewhat different on cams with exactly the same characteristics based on what the original cam core condition was. A regrind might have a significantly smaller circle than one from a new core.

And, yes, a big cube engine with have torque reduction at lower speeds than a small engine. HOWEVER, it will also begin torque production at a higher value than the small engine and even with the accelerated torque reduction probably will out perform.

Keep in mind, a cam is designed to run on a specific lifter diameter.
If you vary the cam base circle from that too far, you can be in for early failure.

Way back, a lot of new cam grinder people came on the scene and they thought they would save a few minutes and "cut a fat hog" by just cleaning a lobe on a regrind instead of grinding it to the original size. If there was a large difference, the lifters usually failed first.

John, I was aware of that, I just thought that if I got some numbers, I could compare them to mine. The reason I want to use the $00 jr, is because the cam is available to everyone. If the new designed port works well, I want everyone to be able to reproduce it. A much better cam would be the Erson D410, but it's no longer available . Also remember this is a small engine (258) Too bad I'm not rich I could just buy one.

I'm getting very similar numbers to yours. Base circle around .951 and heel to toe on cam 1.358, so .407.

Ron I have a 400jr in box from Isky. .407 lift. .930 base circle. New in box with card.
Keep in mind if the L100 suits your port design it is readily available. Cheers
Tony

Thank you very much, Now I can convert this cam to an 8BA style. I bore the nose for a 3/4 press in bushing , then turn iy down for the timing gear. I know they make adapters but the gesr doedn;t run very trur and you don't get the oiling, and this is cheaper. Thanks again Ron.

That's interesting, my cam is new, in box, from Isky as well. Seems odd they would grind the same cam with different base circles.

Caams can be ground from used cams as well as billet's. The buillits will have a larger base circle.

Isky in the past {the last Century} sold cams that were ground on used cores I recall one engine build I was involved with. The owner purchased a new cam directly from Isky I think it was 400 jr. Helping this fellow install the cam I noticed it was extremely loose in the cam bearings. The original stock cam fit the cam bearings perfectly so we discovered this cam from Isky had .010 undersize bearing journals! Used cam reground including undersize bearing journals with no notation what's so ever from Isky with the paper work included sure had a couple of guys pissed off that day.

Lots of bad things happening at Isky during the '90's. There were times when, unless you degreed the cam, there was no assurance it was ground right. Hopefully they have got it straightened out.
