Default C59A - Purpose of threaded holes on block

I'm nearing the final stages in the rebuild of my C59A engine, and while working on mocking parts to the block I noticed four large tapped holes on the block near the water pumps. I'm getting ready to paint the block, and was just wondering what the purpose of these threaded holes.

Per Joe Abbin's book, Ford & Mercury Flathead V-8 Identification & Rebuilder's Guide, figure 2-5 page 2-5, those four holes were used for the front engine supports on 32-36 model engines and carried over on all later models. Thus later engines can be installed in early cars using the original mounting brackets.

Also, in my opinion, they are fine, stout holes for lifting the engine from the front face.

Ok. Thanks. I quickly checked the two books I have and didn't see any mention of it. I'm guessing this hole is for the same purpose.

that hole is for a drain pet cock for the engine block, most people just put a brass plug in the hole

That one [it has a mate on other side], is so you can drain coolant from block

I always put a radiator type petcock in the two lower drain holes - makes it a lot easier to drain the coolant out and not "drop the damn brass plug" in the bucket! LOL

I think I have heard that the '53 pickups had a one-year only motor mounting system that used these front holes. Any body know for sure?

Zeke3 pretty-much nailed it, on TWO counts. This second picture shows completed engines being shuttled either to or from the "run-in" positions that spun the engines after assembly.....NOTE the 'oddball' bellhousing fixtures. DD

Haha! Reminds me when we were asked to add some holes in certain sheet metal parts by our powder coater.

Yes, and the later Y-blocks retained the system

Heres mine. Also those four holes can be used for making your own engine stand if you have no waterpumps fitted.

I used the two right holes (as viewed from the flywheel) to mount the pointer for TDC.

Yep, nice engine 34 Gaz. Very close in colour to mine. I wonder why none of this info is mentioned in the two flathead books I have?
