Re: 39 sedan front disc brake or not?
No 5 on 5½, If it would help I could measure my distance to the fender from the tire and someone with drums could compare with their stock set up

Re: 39 sedan front disc brake or not?
Right on klicker....I have stock brakes on my '39 coupe....highly modified 59AB, L-Z 25T gears, and I DRIVE. With the bias ply tires, I can easily lock up the front tires...so, what's the point. 400 HP....a/t trans...wide radials....driving like your hauling moonshine escaping the cops.....OK....get discs. Never had discs on my cars, been at it for 50 years....never needed them....but, that's me. Robert

bgarrett is absolutely correct! The HAMB has absolutely no desire to be associated with "street rods". Huge difference between a street rod and a hot rod. DD

Re: 39 sedan front disc brake or not?
My '35 has '39 juice brakes in good working order. I enjoy driving just a bit more carefully when driving it. I go with the speed of traffic, but allow a bit more room between me and car in front of me. For that, the "stock" brakes are just fine. I like the fact that I have to pay attention and plan ahead. In fact, it gives me time to see what a-holes most drivers in their "moderns" are, always darting in and out of traffic, tailgating, and driving too fast for surrounding conditions.
If I want to drive fast, I drive my S-2000. In it, I can out-stop almost every car on the road. I can make unlimited panic stops from 70 mph with no fade in less than a quarter the distance required by my '35. I can drive at extra-legal and/or extra-sensible speeds on any road, in any condition, without giving a thought to whether my brakes are up to the task. If I had to give up one to keep the other, I'd give up the S-2000 in a minute. If I tried and somehow was successful in modifying my '35 to stop as well as my S-2000, it wouldn't be the same car. Not worse, if that's what you want, but different. But that's just me... |

On the ECI 1940 setup, the hubs are kicked out about 1/2" on each side.
