1934 driveline install help
Trying to mock up my 34 to see how things fit. I bought it in pieces. I have the transmission attached to the torque tube, but it seems to be 1/4” too far to the back. Also, what is the trick to doing up the nuts on the bottom of the torque tube?
Thanks |

Re: 1934 driveline install help
I don't have the numbers handy but there was a different length torque tube for the 4 cylinder compared to the V8. I am not sure what nuts you are talking about on the bottom of the torque tube, how about a picture.

Can’t seem to get the pictures to post here. The nuts that hold the torque tube to the trans. Mount.
Is there a install sequence? Is the 4 cylinder driveshaft longer? |

Re: 1934 driveline install help
The difference in torque tube lengths is 1-1/2" between V8 and 4 -cylinder. DD

Re: 1934 driveline install help
Duke, just did that 2 weeks ago. Must have been a problem for me before, as I found self locking nuts (AN) on bottom and castle nuts on top. Also found my special tapered 11/16 socket to fit close to torque tube.

Re: 1934 driveline install help
I think I figured it out. The bolt holding the rear spring pack together was too big so it was pushing everything forward.

Re: 1934 driveline install help
Yes, glad you have it figured out. The 1/4" discrepancy you described would not be due to a mismatch of V8 and 4 Cyl parts. Fwiw the 4 cyl drive shaft and torque tubes are shorter than V8s. the 4 cyl engine in a 33/34 has to come back further than the v8, so the trans mount is reversible to sit the trans further rearward, consequently the torque tube is shorter.
The clamshell nuts should be a 5/8 af. Ford used a lot of these, 7/16 unf normally (these days, anyway) being 11/16. Save any 5/8 af 7/16 nuts you may find when dismantling any old Ford. In the clamshell situation that extra clearance is helpful. Mart. |
