JB will hold with oil. Just make sure that the surface is clean.

Hi, Don,

What about a little braze...not so much heat but a little more time with the torch and a very good seal?

Regards....Say hi to Bruce.

I'm with you, why not braze it? I am using a pan now that someone once drilled about twenty holes in and attached a breather to. When I got the pan there was no breather and I was going to use the downdraft tube anyway.
So I brazed a piece of thin metal to the backside of the pan. Holds up really good, JB weld is good stuff, just don't think I would trust a $$ motor to it.

I'm with Ken. A few pan pinholes aren't gonna hurt anything even if the JB Weld lets loose. Jack E/NJ

I repaired a dad dent/tear in an oil pan with epoxy body adhesive-kind used to attache fenders on modern cars. clean outside of pan with scotch brite and put the epoxy on the tear and it does not leak. If I ever take the pan off, I will probably ding out the dent and weld the tear but for now it works good, does not leak

My father used JB Water Weld on the farm tractor fuel tank after a mishap. Worked good and was still holding when he sold the unit. Good stuff!!

Braze it . This is a common problem with trucks from the 1990s into
the 2000's as well as rear end axle covers. For some customers who don't
want to spend for labor and a new crankcase we cut a common nail & put in the
pin hole and mig or braze the nail head.

Just watch it sometimes when they has been sitting with slush for long periods they get brittle and ends up with cracks looking like a spiderweb.
When they are that way trying to fix them donīt work they crack worse from vibrations later.

If the oil pan is sitting on your work bench I would cut out the bad metal and MIG weld a patch. Lap weld or butt weld. Why take a chance with epoxy?

Braze or silver solder is the best repair.

repaired a pan on my latest build with JB weld. I cleaned the surface well and let it completely dry. It holds great.

My oil pan got a 1" inch horizontal crack near the front just below the crankshaft, but high enough on the side to not be critical.. I am not ready at this time to pull the motor and remove the oil pan.. so I drilled two holes, one at each end of the crack (so it wouldn't continue or spread), then I applied JB Weld.. That was 10 months ago.. it is holding fine..

if its got pin holes,if you braze it,which is what i would do you may open up new holes.i always leak ck them whith solvent because if flows so well.just take it out my tank and dump it back in when done.i do think jb weld will probably work fine though.

50 years ago I had an Essex with pinholes in the oil pan .I took it to a radiator shop and they put a layer of lead in bottom. It still holds oil.

JB weld is amazing stuff. I've got couple of International trucks with fuel tanks patched with JB weld and it has held for years with no sign of leaks.

I am curious, if you have a mig welder and are welding some of them, why not weld all of them and be done with it? The problem with JB Weld on an oil pan is that you will never know if or when it will fail. If it dis-bonds inside the pan you may have a leak and glob of JB weld floating around the insides of your engine.

Don, as I stated in my original post, the only way to properly repair your pan is silver solder or braze. If you have a TIG welder, I would use silicon bronze wire. J-B Weld is epoxy. Think of how many thermal cycles your pan will go thru with steel and epoxy of different expansion rates. Do you want to have to constantly look under your car to be sure it's not leaking? Sure, many have said how great J-B Weld is, but my philosophy is do it right the first time. J-B is good for a temporary "patch".
