Default 33 pu steering column

I was wondering how to disassemble a 33 pickup column. Original old truck and I dont want to destroy the horn button or light switch, neither work, but still want to save all I can. Trying to get to the column drop off as it has been butchered in the past. Do pickups and cars use the same drop, any other years the same as th e 33 pickup? Thanks

To get the column out, there should be a "break away" bolt where it attaches to the dash board. It will look like a screw with no slot. Some folks cut a slot for a screw driver, and some weld a nut on there to remove the bolt. To get the light/horn rod out, you take off the light switch body at the end of the column, and remove the horse shoe clip that holds the rod in place. Sounds easy, but there is not enough space to pull the rod out unless the steering box is dropped to the floor, or you back window is out. DO NOT BEND THE ROD to try and cheat, it must come out straight. Not sure if pu and cars are the same, either way its hard stuff to find, so be careful.

The column drops are not the same. Very similar but have different part numbers.

Here is a 1933-34 Ford pickup steering column drop. It is tapered because the dash board is not straight above the steering column as it is in passenger cars. This one sold for $256 in 2016.

2ndgeer,

The column drop in my '34 BB doesn't look like that. As far as I know, the steering column in the truck has never been removed.

I have had BB trucks with a column drop like a 1932 car.

If they were '32s, they shared the same column drop as the passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Not so for '33-'34 pickups, panel deliveries, and BB trucks.

Ted,

With respect, the one on the right side of your first photo is a post-'34 component.

Sorry, but post-34 means that it is a steering column bracket used after the 1934 model year, i.e. 1935 or later. It is not a '33 or '34 pickup bracket.

The bracket that Ted indicated as a '33 is a '40-41 pickup

The sawn-off one on the left in your first photo is a '32 LHD bracket. The '32 RHD version has the opposite slope on the top and no hole for the starter switch control cable.
