What part(s) are you seeing "8BA" on? In other words, what makes YOU consider it to be an "8BA"? DD

As far as I know there is no way to tell the definite year of an 8BA bare block.
However 49-53 Merc blocks were sometimes numbered on the intake manifold surface of the block. Plus, some had hardened valve seats and some did not.
Also, early style had wide belts and later had 3/8 narrow belts. If you have the entire assembled engine, the components may give a clue as to what year it is. You may also have an 8RT truck engine with rotator style valves as a clue. Oil pans may offer a clue.

Peruse the info. below for more details.

"19Fordy" offers about as definitive of an answer as you're gonna find. DD

Paper work only said 8ba because thats really about all that can be said about it. None of the casting #'s on the block mean anything except to the foundry that made it. No vin #'s normally, so...its an 8ba. If it was a complete original motor some guesses could be made from the accessory's on it, but as of now, its an 8ba

And that is essentially ALL that really matters! DD

if the heads are off, take a look at the water passage shapes. Then log onto Van Pelts and look at the pictures of the blocks and their water passages that they list on their web. That could give you more information about what era block you have.
