Default Ventilator/Windwing Weatherstrip Wuestion

The weatherstrip on the Driver's side fell? out and the Passenger side assembly is out for new weatherstripping.

Question: They both appear to have been installed without glue, is that s.o.p.?
If so, what holds it in place? Are the edges bent inwards just a bit?

Will be painting the frame with Rust O Leum, a bit of rust on the bottom.
Also noticed overspray, the door had been repainted at one time in the car's life.

Any suggestions for me before install?

Thank you.

Front glass runner on the vent-a-payne assembly. The assembly has to come out of the door. It is on with 3 or 4 little tube rivits (like brake shoes, only smaller) A helper, and a specialized tool are necessary. I sent mine out, and it cost me a small fortune.

I don’t know about your application, but at least one of the Thunderbird suppliers sells a little “block” like an anvil, with a punch. Made to fit in the window channel and set the replacement rivets. I’d post a picture, but mine’s over at a friends place. We used it to do the same thing on an OT car. Might try Larry’s Thunderbird, I think that’s where I got it. Cheap.

Hi Guys!

Not discussing the rivet strip but the "C" weatherstrip, it appears just to be pressed in by hand and there is no adhesive, like adhesive on a front window weatherstrip.
The Drivers Vent weatherstrip is in great condition but it has popped out of its' channel. There is a female channel in the steel frame where the weatherstrip is pressed in.
Is that all there is to it? Just press it in? But what should be done if the weatherstrip does not stay in its' groove?

The WSM (1957) doesn't call for an adhesive.

I wonder if an adhesive would act like a shim.

Are you saying your WS will not stay in place?

That's correct. On the Driver's side the leading edge part of the WS does not stay in its groove.

JW; the thick rubber weatherstrip for the vent windows has a small lip on the side that causes the rubber to be a friction fit inside the steel C-channel and I've never heard of one falling out. That lip I speak of is present on the top, front and bottom sides of the rubber so it gives a very good hold. It's actually a little difficult to pull one out of the channel even if it is a new rubber. Also, you have a bottom pin and top screw in the vent window that goes THRU the rubber, so how can it fall out?
As far as the C-channel itself, I've restored many of these by rust removal, usually dunking, then cleaning off on the wire-wheel, metal primer and black Rust-O-Leum overcoat. Obviously, the rivets should be drilled out to remove the stainless wind visor at the top prior to cleaning.
Look at the bottom pin for the vent window. If it is badly rusted at the top, you might need to get a new pin in order to restrict the horizontal movement of the vent window assembly in accordance with factory specs.

I need to slow down and look at stuff more closely..mystery solved with Vent Wing Weatherstrip.
A machine nut and bolt was used in rebuilding the frame in the past instead of a rivet which interfered with the WS from seating. A bit of trimming took care of the issue.

My ford manual has instuctions and a diagram on how the ventapayne assembly goes together, if I recall correctly.

Our '41 had similar rivets. I put a piece of steel in a vise, the correct width to fit the channel and used a punch sharpened to a low angle. It set the rivets perfectly. Lasted 25 yrs.

Back in the days when I was doing my restorations, the rivets for reinstalling all the vent window weather-stripping were included in the kits, or you could also buy them separately in packages of a few, in case you ruined one during assembly.
It helps to have a nice punch set and a lot of junk laying around to use for rigid backing, like small strip of wood or the blind end of sockets.

Update both sides vent w/s have been replaced.
I've mentioned before my car has been through a lot in its' life i.e. taken apart and put back together--many times.
The interior window frame never fit correctly and the cause was the positioning of the vent assembly. Over time and through the replacement of the window channels, the vent migrated forward! This decreased the space needed for the interior window frame to fit between the door frame and front of the vent assembly.
The dremel with a cutter blade helped me trim about a quarter inch off the upper window channel moving the vent assembly back. Now the interior window frame and the vent w/s fit correctly.
The doors close so much nicer now...even the wife noticed her door operation. A win.
Next up upper door frame w/s change...thanks Dave!

A win is correct. When you get the little woman to agree with you the battle is won ...
