As Cheryl and I plan our trip to Tennesee, ok there is no planning. I did a little bit on the truck. I removed the front licence plate bracket, which is not a Ford item:


Also worked on the running board damage: GB helped me with the patina at the final stages of repair. next slide please.

Repairs to the damaged running board:

This rip at the back of the running board is one of many things that could be repaired on the truck. Metal was crinkled and bent from damage. Hammer and dolly work to get it back close to original:


Get the Mig and add some metal:


Gently grind but no need to get it perfect, just would not look right if it was too good.


I used some of GBs ideas on the patina. Flat black paint from about a foot and a half away. Light coats. Then several versions of dirt, grindings, and dust rubbed into the semi wet paint, followed by several more shots of primer. Not too bad! Thanks GB!

Very nice compliment! I will take it. GB gave me the confidence to tackle this small project. Mentoring and giving some details like he did on his jailbars helped me.
I took the 32 to NAPA today to get the air filter for the 2015 truck. Got some attention along the way too!
Really enjoying getting it out for nothing special, just hauling myself into town as Billy Joe Shaver sang about!
I have a NOS pitman arm coming this week. Thanks to Robert R in Wyoming for tracking this down for me. With the spindles replaced just seems like the thing to do. I may try to get it on prior to loading up for the trip to Franklin tennessee.next week.

I'm assuming that trucks have to have an annual PA inspection like cars? If so won't the lack of flaps be an issue?

With Antique Plates you don't need any state inspection in Pa. at all. Plates are good for life if you keep the car. If you drop the insurance or sell the car the State wants the plate back. Lately this has been the case I have found.

Any restrictions on how you use a vehicle with antique plate's? In CA it's only to and from events or to and from getting repairs. Or something weird like that.

I would like to get flaps on the truck too. Would make it look more corect. Not sure I would be able to find ones that dont loo NEW?? Unless I di some patina work? Maybe GB would have some hints?
I do have antique PA plates (Vintage 32 plate) SO there are not inspections. I am sure if a occifer felt you were doing something wrong they could make your day misserable.

There will be no mudflaps on the 32 dump truck! There I feel much better with that off the list!
I did get the spare back on the truck. It needs to be on there for the show. I think I will add a lock to that long stud on the spare mount bracket. also. Humm,? I suppose a old lock would look correct. Off to research old pierod correct wheel locks. Another wild goose chase probably?

I got a call from my machinist and I will meet with him to review the final hone of the cylinders and check piston fit for the B engine. These are .080 over pistions. He said the rest is done. Humm, engine and components may come home soon. Good news for the 32 truck project.

Today was helping Cooper make maple cotton candy. And then hived a swarm of bees about 2 miles from home. Throw lawn mowing into the mix and its typical summer day, where we try to pack in as much as possible.

New 32 Ford truck Pitman Arm. Nice to be able to find the correct NOS parts!
The one on the left is for a 33-34. The right one (correct) has more bend and a slight kink to align the ball with the straight drag link. Should work just fine.

Folks,
Spent half the day at the machine shop learning about the reworked "B" block, Known as engine number 1. This is the engine that was a reman block sent to Greenvile PA Montgomery Wards.
Tim Waid is in the pictures cleaning and doing some assembly work to teach me about the rear seal.


Head


The final honing station. He wanted to check the piston size compared to the bore. Basicaly .003 inch clearance:


The new thrust washers, bronze material, and the new replaceable bearings which replace the babbit material.


Rubber rear seal slipped over the end of the crank:


Pressure tested the block to 60PSI (normal pressure is near zero PSI):
Only very tiny air leak where he had to do a repair. It will not leak with water.


His window through the test plate to see his stitch repair work.


Tim set the new woodruff key and pressed on the new crank gear for me. Crank looks really good to me!


Crank mating up with the block for trial only. I have to do some fitting to get the new upper real seal, aluminum part, to set correctly in the block:




All components are back home. Much cleaning and then assembly can start when we get back from the V8 Club Eastern show.


I am tired just thinking about it! But looking forward to building this "B" engine for the ragged ol truck too.
By the way the crank spins very nice with the caps tightened down. The end thrust clearance is about .010 inches. I like the new rubber rear seal concept and the replaceable bearings with line boring through the block and caps. Took a while but should be a good engine for a long long time.

Tim Waid, Valley Machine Blooming Valley PA. He is very busy but can do Model A or B engine work and repairs. He does have a metal spray machine if needed.

I seen Nate mention this indicator cast in the block. A diamond. I believe he had information that dated it at 1938 or newer? I was a little suprised to find it. Just another tidbit of the story behind this old truck and its back story.
Good news is this block does not have any current water leaks.

Below is the link where I found my information. There should be a casting number on the passenger side of the block and the chart in this link shows how to read it. In my research some claim diamond blocks to be more desirable because of better casting material/updated molds. Others say that is false and they used the same molding and specs as original. Either way it’s what we have!
