Mercon / Dexron is the closest formulation to the original Type A.

Question Re: type f

How do you want the car to shift, normally or a more firm shift? The fluid type you choose will make a difference.

Ford-O-matics of the era were specified to use type "A" fluid which was discontinued, but Mercon/Dexron fluid is the recommended replacement type fluid due to its lubricative properties closely matching. Mercon/Dexron can be used in transmissions with the old brass clutch plates or in rebuilt trans with composite type clutch plates.

i wasnt worried about hard or soft shifts just if it would damage the transmission.if others are happy with it ill use it.
