Default Lower front of ‘35

Considering lowering type spindles while converting to hydraulic brakes. Beings I will need new spindles to accommodate the Bendix brake kit & drums. If I do I know I’ll need to change the steering link that attaches to it. Is there other modifications I’ll need to do?

They don't make lowering type spindles for early Fords. You have a couple of options. Use a reversed leaf eye spring or invest in a dropped axle. It depends on how far you want to drop the front. With the axle you will need some different steering arms which you can get from Speedway (or other sources) along with the new spindles. You may or may not need to change the drag link or tie rod. Sometimes you need to shorten them.

Anthony:

You also will have to modify the top of your new spindles to make the new backing plates lay flat. I used a die grinder. I used MT Brake kit. Made a template to assure grinding fit.

Anthony .....Are you really sure that's what you want to do? Sometimes, especially with the stock, spoke wheels, lowering a '35 just doesn't look quite as good as you had expected. Just sayin'......! DD

At least the weld has more metal then the fender.

I agree about the drop spindles. Don't know what that means, but maybe that exists now. Yes you have to drop the spindle arms if you go with a dropped axle. Most dropped axles decrease the wheel track length to clear the fenders when turning, which is important. Which would make all the linkage shorter. Steering arm will work, tie bar will need to be shortened.

If I was going to do a serious front drop on a 35, the only way to get there is with a drop axle. (well or bags) If you don't mind the track length shorter. You'll want to adjust and refresh all the linkage anyways.

Hey rich .....Nothin' wrong with a lowered '35, for sure! I was purely speaking about one still shod with the stock wire wheels. This one pictured has reached the limit (in my eyes) of lowering one (with WIRES) before going TOO far. In fact, the REAR is TOO low, especially with the wheel/tire 'sunk' back into the fender opening that much. And don't confuse THIS car with the beauty that "PeterC" used to own.
PeterC's coupe was "PURE Perfection"! DD

I believe you would be happy with just a reversed spring eye in the front. Any good spring shop can do it by re-arching the spring the other way. Not much money, and you get about an 1 & 1/2" drop.

Man, that's a perfect suggestion. And, just so that you have a good idea of how much drop you will ACTUALLY achieve, I would have ONLY the bottom, MAIN leaf reversed. Then, you'll have a difficult time using a spring spreader on a REVERSED-eye spring. Simple little solution in pictures below! DD

Sure you are on the right forum? Bagged cars are great. Dig the lowrider stuff a ton, certainly paint and detail. Not so much the hillbilly rat rod stuff.

Just curious if your comments helped the OP.

Think I’ll leave it. With the tires I have on it’s stance not that much different than a mild lowering. Someone said not too much, I agree after looking around then looking @ mine again. I think just the hydraulic brakes alone is fine

Great looking car. Very clean. If you want to go a little you could. But it looks like you have some motor there. So a little clearance might be nice when your driving hard. Cool ride. Road warrior.

Aesthetically on a 34+ car if the fender openings or at or just below the tire it fills the opening. Not necessarily with a truck as more clearance is better. Nothing saying a car with a little lift is bad or not correct. Just a dime a dozen opinion. Trends are not set by doing what everyone else is doing either. If you care about that.

I'd just drive it and have fun. It's a very nice ride.

Thx DD & Tinker! Was a great find in 2012. Funny & a bit sad story. My 90 ur old mom’s girl friend mentioned to her, she had a car that was her 30 years deceased husband in her garage since. Garage was pseudo heated as two wall joined to house & exterminated regularly too. My mom says my son can help. Thought I was gonna see a 1985ish POS. Got there & it was covered but could see by the height it was something interesting! Pulled two covers off outside & another covering interior. Virtually no dust or dirt outside or in the perfect interior! A bit hazy from sitting. That’s the good the bad no motor, tranny or radiator. With only experience on OV engine type Rides & none on early Fords I had to buy it & the adventure began! Evidently before the gentleman died he had some thief working on engine & told him it’d be easier if he pulled defective stuff & he’d fix at his shop. Turned out th be a crook & was never heard from again. The husband obviously didn’t checkup on the guy before using & turned out to be a Shyster & stole the engine tranny & radiator. Guy died a year or so after.

AnthonyG , your car looks very nice now for sure, like others said, reverse eye will drop it a nice amount if you want to make a small change. Big n little tires are cool too, I did both and like the stance. 550s up front and 700s in back. Enjoy!

Tom urs looks great! Actually the pic of mine has big & smalls. Went with modern tires sizes & mounted up to my wires fine. Speedway has reverse eye spring for $85. It’s cheap enough I might get it. Drops the front about 1”-2 1/2”’s.

The only thing is, and I don't recall anyone mentioning it on this thread, is that running a reversed eye spring reduces the amount of suspension travel, whereas with a dropped axle
you'll still have the original full range. When I lowered my 35 I used the whole gamut; rev spring, drop axle, low profile tires. Made up lowering blocks for the rear and fitted a reversed eye leaf to the rear spring. Too low; looked good, but ride was severely compromised. I refitted original main leaves front and back.

Curious little thing about reversing a spring is you can make an arch curve of the main leaf on the garage floor with some chalk, then with some blocks and a bit of patience on a press you can turn that curve around and then put the main spring into the original spring pack. No need to heat and roll the ends. Yes this will change the shackle angles also.

Any new reverse eye spring will give you more lift then what you are trying to take off with that old regular spring. Reverse eyes can be a bear to install.

If I wanted 2" up front. I'd go with a drop axle even with all that it takes to do so. Leave the spring alone if in good condition. But if you want a little on a budget.
