Default Google

Almost every time I google one of the part's houses, (such as Snyder's as I just did), the first thing that comes up in that search is Mac's. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

yea if you just google snyders you get the pretzel people (snyders of hannover).

might have to clear your cookies.

now if you just google model A parts - companies can pay google to have all sorts of perks like showing peak business times, up to date hours of operations, interior photos, menus, reviews and have the ability to hide negative reviews - including the perk of being the top of search results.

nothings really new in that aspect - 50 years ago if a store wanted to be #1 they would run ads in every newspaper, magazine, billboard, park bench, side of bus, flyers, etc they could get their hands on/afford.

Carl I made my living off of making certain web sites appear as you have describe. In the early days of the internet we used various techniques to make this happen however today it is almost completely controlled by the search engines. The only variable is by what we call pay to play or pay per click. Create favorites or bookmarks and use other search engines such as yahoo or bing.

Not only pay to play but the site with the most visits/hits moves to the top.

Also, when you google something, often the pay to play sites come up with the word Ad in a box near the top left side of the listing and above the actual search results. My understanding is that clicking on the listings with the Ad designation improves that advertisers "Ad Rank" and moves that company's listing higher on the page.

I should have said, helps move up in the list rather then moves to the top.
Still best bet, once you find what you are looking for, add to your favorites list. You can left click on the link in your favorites list and cut/paste to where you want it in the list. I try and group my similar links in groups so they are easy to find.

Exactly! Google is a search engine. Use it only when you're looking for someone/something. If you already know where you want to go, as many have said here, you don't need Google. Many folks have Google as their home page of their web browser and erroneously equate Google with the Internet because that's what comes up when their web browser, MS Internet Explorer, Chrome or maybe Firefox is launched.
