Optima 6v charger
will a regular 6v 6amp Sears charger work OK to charge a 6v Optima once a month or so, just to keep it up? The charger backs off to 2amps as the battery charges.

Re: Optima 6v charger
I have a portable (small) Sears Platinum charger and love it. It charges Standard AGM GEL and Sears PLATINUM batteries. It pretty much does it all for you except select the battery type. It goes through an analyze process etc. Once charged it automatically goes to maintenance. Make sure the charger has the AGM option which is what your Optima is. Mine even tells me if my battery is bad.

Re: Optima 6v charger
Yes, it will but it will not work if the Optima is dead. You must then either use an Optima / AGM Approved charger or put it in parallel with a 6 volt battery to charge the Optima.

Re: Optima 6v charger
I have several Optima batteries and they are all AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat). The charger I mentioned above will work for most automotive batteries and for $99 it one of the best "garage toys" I've bought.

Re: Optima 6v charger
I saw somewhere that you needed a special charger for "SOME" Optima battery's. I wondered about that because generator, alternator or AGM charger, how would the battery know the difference? 6 volts/5-8 amps DC is the same whether coming from charger or charging system, isn't it? Or am I missing something?

Again, is my 70's Sears 6v charger, tapering down to 2amps OK to use for a 6v Optima? |

Long answer. Yes as long as it's not discharged.

Re: Optima 6v charger
Optima batteries will be damaged if left in a discharged state... Always best to charge as soon as they are drained.
