Modern condenser
The condenser in my modern upper plate went bad. When I go to NAPA tomorrow, what car uses the same condenser as the Nu Rex upper plate uses?

Re: Modern condenser
A word of caution, I purchased a set of points from Mac's and the brass post on the bottom was crimped in a fasion that would not allow the points to sit flush with the upper plate. This resulted in the points arm resting against the cam at an odd angle, not good. Look for a good fit with whatever you buy.
I should have pointed out that the NuRex specs specify V8 points and condenser for the years noted above |

Re: Modern condenser
On the NAPA condensers the wire going from the condenser to the points is longer than is necessary and will rub on the dist. housing when you adjust the spark. You might need to shorten the wire . I did.

Re: Modern condenser
As Kingbee`s question is answered, i might get a bit OT ....
Who did put the (new-style) condenser to the firewall and did stay with that? Did condenser survive longer? Did someone try "other" condensers (not original meant for cars)? Without metal-cover? Thank you Christoph |

Re: Modern condenser
I have never had to use the NAPA condenser I have as backup, but I notice that the bracket is actually attached to the condenser, unlike the condenser now in my present upper plate, which just slides into the bracket on the plate. Does the one with the attached bracket work okay. . . . or not?

Re: Modern condenser
Works ok but the wire is longer than needed and will rub the dist. housing when the plate is rotated.

The guy that taught me the condenser trick, over fifty years ago still runs the condenser in this manner on his 1928 strip down. I never asked how many times he had replaced it but it looks like its been there a while. Lots of country folks use strip down model A's like jeeps. Some use them to go hunting in and don't care if the condenser is mounted correctly. Functionality and the ease of replacement is the most important thing.
