Is my axle to long? 1934 banjo

I am working on a 1934 rear end and the axle shaft sticks out 5” from the end of the housing. The rear hub won’t go on deep enough for the bearing to sit on the housing.

Am I overlooking something or do you suppose this rear end has the wrong axles in it?

A little history on your rear end and axles might just give an answer here. There are several lengths of axles during the 1930s & 1940s and also the diff housings have some big variations. You need to know what you have got here. Is your 1934 Ford car stock or a built up hot rod ? Regards, Kevin.

Well I don’t know much history about it. This is under a 2dr sedan project I bought a few years ago. It had mechanical backing plates but no drums, just hubs. I did remove the axle tubes to replace the gaskets. The gears and bearings inside looked very good. I did not take the carrier apart.

The hubs I am attempting to use are the hubs it came with but I am guessing they are newer, the drum sits on the outside of the hub.
Is that my problem?

I have a 37 rear end sitting around and the axle only sticks out approx 4 1/4”

Uh, did you replace the gaskets with the same thickness, how is the lash?

Also I don’t think it was a hot rod. The parts still in tacked had not been modified. all of the hardware holding the rear end in had been there for a while. It took some WD40 and a little heat to get it all loose.

The lash is good. Everything about the rear end seems great... except the axles seem to be sticking out to far.

Yep, got 35-36 axles in there...they are longer than 34 but same gear count

Like Brian said above, you likely have '35-'38 axles in there. 1934 axles are 32.187 long, whereas the '35 and later axles are 32.85" long. Doing the math, that is an extra 0.663" too long, which is damn near the roughly 3/4" you allude-to farther up. DD

Hot rod works has a pair of original axles. I talked to them last week.

You need to mag and dye penetrant test used axles before you install them, paying extra attention to the inboard end of the keyway area.

Fred, barnfind08 here, probably has NOS axles if you want the best
