Default Oil Pump Thoughts .

I see posts where advice is given on how to stop the oil pump dropping when the pan is dropped . It just plain beats me why anyone would want to keep the pump up in the block . Now is the time to give the pump a good check over it is the heartbeat of your engine after all . Very easy to service check the gears ,filter screen and bottom spring for sure . I mark the gears so they mate the same and invert the bottom plate if it too worn . The spring is often corrosion damaged and a lower bit of coil can break off LOVE YOUR PUMP !!! If you have moved the crank use a mirror and flashlight to align the pump . Use a cable tie around the pump stalk through the nearest pair of pan bolt holes . Clip the cable tie when pan is nearly home and pull clear . I have seen many blocks with damaged taper holes caused by regular bolts being used to keep the pan up .

Jon in West Drayton London England and a Happy Festive Season to you al !!!

John, I agree with you. I have never bothered with keeping the pump in the block - I let it fall out if it wants to but usually, it is quite happy to stay there. If I want to check it, I have to pull it out. Only once have I had to use a centre punch to prick the pump body so it didn't fall out when I was refitting the sump. I haven't tried your method with a cable tie. Maybe some day.

John, that is a good suggestion on how to keep the oil pump in place while re installing the pan. Yes, the oil pump should be inspected when the pan is dropped and repairs made where necessary.

I find it easier to have the pump stay in place when removing the pan, then, after the pan is out of the way, then I remove the oil pump.

Yes, that is what I do. Most of the suggestions I see is how to keep the pump in place when installing to pan.
