Can someone ID this ignition coil?
Not mine, asking for someone else...
This coil is in a '56 T-Bird, it's not original to the car. .FAC-12029-A . [7113] The owner would like any info about it he can get, tech specs or otherwise. (in addition to: 12v, external resistor) Due to the unexpected construction of the top. What was it original to, what are it's ratings, etc. ??? Thanks Last edited by dmsfrr; 08-13-2021 at 10:43 AM. |

Re: Can someone ID this ignition coil?
... hmmph ...
Here is an exact reproduction decal - https://www.autoware.com.au/shop/cla...on-coil-decal/ FAC-12029-A is the ENG NO for the B6A 12029-B 12V IGN COIL used with points systems (1956-1974). I guess you realize I will be up all night to find an answer ...

Re: Can someone ID this ignition coil?
OK ...
The coil itself appears to be from a FORD - NEW HOLLAND TRACTOR. Why, I would not know but have seen stranger things. The DECAL is repro - https://www.dennis-carpenter.com/tru...-64-coil-decal - and this site will give you years of applications for the FORD BRANDED coil. The first character 7 is the year of manufacture, 1957 I would assume. 1965/ was branded AUTOLITE, 1972/3 MOTORCRAFT. The coil shown has a retainer attached to the top to hold the coil wire down. I keep getting reference to D5TE-12029-AB but cannot find a photo of an exact FORD coil, only aftermarket. This is what I THINK it is. It may be something entirely different.

Re: Can someone ID this ignition coil?
I have never seen anything like it, but will take a wild guess. Its part of a 67 transistor ignition system?

I had a 1964 T-bird with transistorized ignition but it had a regular mustard top coil. The transistor box was mounted under the dash to keep it cool but it had started to fail when I purchased the car. I bypassed the transistor and put points & condenser back in to repair it. Those old transistors would last longer than points but the problem was that they weren't as easy to source as a set of points & condenser when it crapped out. The system was dropped by FoMoCo due to problems and spare parts became unobtainium after that. I was looking at a coil being sold as a part to fit the T-birds and it appeared to have a tower that is off set from center with the two primary terminals on one side. This looks like it was made to clear something wherever it was mounted. I know zilch about the small birds but this may have been why that coil was used. Re: Can someone ID this ignition coil?
The PERMA-TUNE coil used was C3TZ 12029-A and is shown in referring URL -

Re: Can someone ID this ignition coil?
Ask him when he takes it off if he can take close-up photos.

Re: Can someone ID this ignition coil?
A few more photos.
It looks to have been made for a bolt-on round ballast resistor as part of the setup. Last edited by dmsfrr; 08-13-2021 at 07:26 PM. |

Re: Can someone ID this ignition coil?
That has to be a period aftermarket performance coil, such as MALLORY. I bet someone over at the H.A.M.B. could ID it.

Re: Can someone ID this ignition coil?
Why doesn’t he post it himself and save the back and forth?

Re: Can someone ID this ignition coil?
It's a Mallory since the Big M can be seen on the clamp. It looks like it has a ballast resistor as an integral part. It's a different type than I've ever seen before but a lot of aftermarket stuff is still out there like the old IC55 Echlin Bear coils.
Here is a good thread from the HAMB. one of the posts has a coil a lot like it. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...thread.861293/ I found a photo of a Mallory Voltmaster Fleet Coil which looks like it. https://picclick.com/Vintage-Street-...741933684.html This is likely the same one. https://www.ebay.ie/itm/VINTAGE-STRE...-/370741933684 |

Re: Can someone ID this ignition coil?
That has to be it, although marked 6V it is of the same appearance. And I did not pickup on the MALLORY LOGO on the coil strap ... (short eyeballs) ...
THANX! for finding that ...
