In the fuel line of a '55 T-Bird. What is it?
It's in place of the oem fuel filter but doesn't look familiar to me.
Is it a pressure regulator, fuel filter, ? . |

It looks like a regulator but I've never seen one like that. If it is it must regulate to a fixed pressure. Most regulators have a dial or some other means of selecting a desired pressure. Does the car have an electric fuel pump? Is there a filter somewhere else in the fuel line?

Pressure regulator.... that was my first guess too. Maybe an after-market one from the 60's.
Looks like it might have an adjustment screw(?) in the top center. It's on the other side of the country from me, and the photo is the only info I have so far. The owner isn't sure what it is either. |

My first guess would be a regulator, but I suppose it could be filter of some sort, adapted from something else. Someone used to build oil filters that looked a lot like that, but much larger. IIRC, they were a bypass type.

I don't know. doesn't really look like a regulator. Could it be some sort of pulsation damper? If so then why?

That is a fuel pressure regulator - and it would be a miracle if the diaphragm was still intact! Even if it is a barn find "survivor" - the crummy alcohol fuel we get would eat it right up........

The owner said it's coming off the car, for a real fuel filter, likely not to be seen again.
Thanks to everyone for the help. |

Look for the brand underneath the old vintage Filt-O-Reg units will bring $75-$100 from collectors. If the owner doesn't want it grab it.
