By any chance did you it the starter push rod while you were making the connection? Not a lot of clearance right there. In any case, no matter what ground you have, you always hook the red charger cable to the red post of the battery. In the Model A it has positive ground, so the red battery post should be grounded, best to take the metal battery cover off the floorboard and see what you have. BTY the Model T was negative ground.
