Default Need reliable "real sounding" horn

Ok, Gramp's roadster came with a knock off horn, maybe a Hutchins? I have messed with the thing, cleaning and so on. The frame that holds the commutator etc. is welded together so no brushes to access. I can't get anything beyond it spinning and making a sick half horn sound. So will a horn like the ones sold by Mikes, Brattons, Snyders be reliable and sound authentic??

I think the best one to get is an original horn - once adjusted the sound is great and proper sound. They are usually available at any Model Swap Meets. Price is usually relative reasonable

I'm sure that "repo" horns sold by Snyders, Mikes & Etc will sound good. But why not stick about $100- 125 dollars in your pocket and go to a Model A swap meet and get an original, there are many too choose from.

Try A&L Parts Specialties, Box 301, Canton, Conn 06019-0301. Phone 860-693-0112. Also ask for one of their catalogs. Very authentic, high quality parts, good to do business with.

Nothing beats a restored original. The repops made by A&L is a good second choice. The Ames horn I restored for my delivery sounds real nice. Have 2 Spartons yet to finish. The motor covers were missing and the projectors and diaphrams were trashed when I bought them, so they have A&L repop tin. Probably will finish them this May as I have to keep concentrated on selling off excess parts as I downsize to what I can store in my small shop. Rod

The occasional Hutchins horn sounds almost like an original Model A horn. Mine sounds like a mastodon fart. Maybe somebody has a suggestion about how to make a Hutchins or other knock-off sound decent? Otherwise pay and play for the original $$$$.

Rebuilt originals are available frequently on this site. They of course are very good sound. I have purchased three from Alan at A&L and they also have excellent sound and look great. Nothing worse than a sick aoogha horn as it reflects on the entire car. Wayne

The repo horns from the suppliers sound good, never had an issue
I believe they all carry the same one
I bought from brattons and snyders ...no difference that I noticed

Thanks for the good info. The swap meet idea sounds great but I'm down in the Florida keys and it would be several hundred miles to a swap meet. I'll look at all the options everybody suggested and go from there. Thanks

Watch the Ford Barn swap meet section. I'm sure one will appear.

The repo horn from A&L is an excellent choice. They are real quality. We have them on a couple of cars you can't tell them from originals and the sound is perfect. They come in either 6 or 12 volt which is a nice option too. A&L does not have a website their phone 860-693-0112

Model A'ing is FUN! Guys go CRAZY when their horn quits. A friend spent a WHOLE day, runnin' around town & callin' everybody & FINALLY bought a second hand horn from our Guru, for $150.00 & with NO WARRANTY.
