Default oil canister what am I missing?

Seems I’m missing a bushing or something or I have wrong filter. It’s a motor craft fl-20. Way to much clearance. I tossed the old one now I am wondering if there was a reducer stuck on it. Oh it’s off a 46’ motor I am putting together

Ironic that this post comes up now. See the discussion thread from yesterday titled "Oil Filter Canister Blues". His canister has a bushing thingy that he thought shouldn't be there, was trying to remove it.

Maybe different canisters take different filters with different diameter center holes.

You need this filter. It fits the cannister. Other filters are ADVANCE AUTO #L20701, MOTORCRAFT FL-20, Hastings LF 101 and the one most folks on Fordbarn recommend WIX 51006.https://www.bing.com/search?q=purola...ANAB01&PC=HCTS

If you Google FL-20 filter, you will see that it comes with some gaskets and washer type seals. Maybe they were not in the box when you purchased the filter. I use Fram C4 or Wix 51006 in my '46 Coupe, and on one occasion, there was no gasket when I opened the box. I guess someone else needed one.

Yes I have those gaskets the 3 big ones for the lid, not sure why I got 3 ?? Looks like there different thicknesses. And I did get the 2 small ones also. Something is missing have to check solvent tank maybe the “Washers” are in there.

The filters I use have a bail on the top to pull it out when you’re changing it…. Yours isn’t upside down is it?…..my filter canister has a crown shaped washer in the bottom that keeps the filter up off the bottom of the canister…..Mark

The filters normally have a grommet top and bottom that make it a reasonably tight (sliding) fit on the central column.
