Repairing a Heater Shut Off Valve
Does anyone have a source or know what you can replace the "composite" (?) washer with? It is just behind the metal washer.

Re: Repairing a Heater Shut Off Valve
I believe you can take (pry) the "micky mouse ears" off the rectangle that it is on, unscrew the shaft, replace the washer, re assemble and stake or solder the handle back on. Keep in mind where it seats needs to be true and not pitted from rust. That fiber washer seals the shaft when the valve is in the OPEN position. Otherwise it leaks there unless opened to the stop against the washer.

Re: Repairing a Heater Shut Off Valve
Try outdoor water faucet packing in the smallest diameter available.

Re: Repairing a Heater Shut Off Valve
Does anyone have a picture of the "inside" of these shut off valves? I talked with a gentleman today who says my brass washer does not belong on the threaded portion. It should only be a "packing material wound around the threads to form the seal." Of course it is special in that it has to accommodate temps at 212 degrees. We don't want to get our Flattys that hot, but in case you do, the normal packing is not for hot water and it will melt. I see some specialty websites have packing for steam valves that might work if they are small enough.
Any thoughts? Last edited by Pech33; 05-04-2022 at 06:58 PM. Reason: spelling |

I am looking for the same seal for mine. Pech33 mine looks exactly like yours with the brass washer on it. the seal was just crumbs when I took it out.

Re: Repairing a Heater Shut Off Valve
Years ago, there was a person that made kits for these. I seem to recall in California. Perhaps someone with a better memory than me will weigh in...
