I would check the timing. It could also be that the muffler is wore out.

My '57 Fairlane w/a 312 would do that when going down a big hill (when I took my foot off the gas ). I don't think its anything to worry about . - FF

Light backfire through the exhaust at closed throttle downhill is normal.

Check the points. Mine makes a little more of a pop when the rubbing block is going away and they are not opening enough.

when I first got my 51 merc, the tailpipes from the mufflers back were swiss cheese, and did the same thing, when I replaced the exhaust , no more problem. I think holes in the exhaust pipes caused the light backfiring.

It's been way too many years since I've had the pleasure of driving and listening to a nice V8 pop out of the tailpipes.
When the carb throttle plates are closed at higher rpm the intake manifold vacuum goes high, pulling some (extra?) fuel thru the idle jets but with virtually no air in the resulting fuel/air mixture. Without enough air the mixture only partially ignites in the cylinder, then it passes out into the hot exhaust pipes where it usually finds a bit of extra oxygen and can re-ignite.
As long as the engine is burning cleanly the rest of the time, enjoy the music.

Hi all,
I have a stock bodied 50 Ford coupe with a 302 so I don't really belong on any of the Fordbarn sites but the sound every one is describing is what I have also. That is the perfect sound as far as I am concerned. Love it!!

I had a 57 Studebaker silver hawk that did that, it was the fuel pump over powering the needle and seat on down hill engine on compression, flooded the carb and let the engine back fire, added a fuel pressure regulater and solved the problem
