Default converting to 12vt, voltage regulator?

My 48 Mercury has rubber grommets on the bottom of the 6vt positive ground voltage regulator. The rubber is located where the screws mount the regulator to the firewall. I suppose the rubber prevents the regulator from grounding to the firewall. When going to 12vt neg. do I use the rubber grommets on the new regulator? I am using a new Painless harness and I called their tech line. The tech said he didn't know for sure though he thought the regulator should be grounded. Thanks for any help. Larry / Pa.

The regulator should have a wire direct from the G terminal on generator to baseplate of regulator. I would add a non-stock one from there direct to where battery is grounded to eliminate any potential resistance areas in ground path. I assume you are using '56--60's Ford generator stuff, which wires just like the 6v original.
