Default installing new fuel line

Hi guys I need your help again. I am installing a new gas line in my 48 Merc. It is the original copper plated steel with ferrel. How much fuel line past the ferrel and fitting goes into the tank? I hope I asked that in a way that makes sense to those reading.

Does that apply for only the tank? or any connection?

If you solder the ferrule like Ford did originally, you'll be in trouble at the fuel pump with a 1/4". 1/8" is safer at that connection. If you don't solder the ferrule, it will adjust itself when you tighten the fitting.
