Why not use a voltage reducer with the 6 volt motor ?

aussie merc,
As previously mentioned, the voltage reducer might be the first option. The biggest challenge with trying to source a 12 volt fan motor for your heater is the size of the motor itself and how it would mount in the fan housing, the size of the motor shaft being able to accept the fan blades, and the fact that it needs to be able to reverse direction, which accounts for the 4 wires (forward blows heat into the cabin, and reverse blows into the defrost ducts).

There are two wire reversing 6/12V motors from NAPA/Balkamp that will fit the early Ford heaters. The shaft may have to be shortened, and a reversing switch will be needed for heat/defrost. I am using one my '40's '41 heater with the reversing switch located on top of the housing. Multiple speeds can be attained using OE resisters.

I replaced the motor on my '46 Ford with a 12V. one from from Dennis Carpenter, that if I remember had four wires. Part number B6A-18527-B, give them a call.

I failed to mention that the real magic happens with the correct 5 position switch -

~ Forward Low
~ Forward High
~ OFF
~ Reverse High
~ Reverse Low

Looks like this:

Fortunately, I found one at Hershey Swap Meet last year. Keep an eye on Ebay. They are made by Ark-les and have a resistor made into the rear of the switch to handle current reduction.

Bob C,
That's a great find. If I decided some day to go 12 volt, how would I go about connecting it to my forward/reverse switch? Where does the 5th wire go? I'm somewhat electrically handicapped at times!

I've been looking at this motor, but I haven't tried it yet to see if it can be made to work.

woodiewagon46,
Very helpful info. So which motor did you end up using/who did you buy it from?
Thanks

Again thanks all already running 6V reducer just looking at future as want to make a full 12v change , 1/2 and 1/2 is not the most desireable ,12v conversion was done prior to acquiring the vehicle [it works but how it never burnt to the ground gets me ]
