New Tires
Bought a set of new Excelsior tires for my coupe. Tried to break the old tires down to take them off of the rims and they were so hard I could not budge the bead. Took them to a local tire shop and had all four mounted. Cost me $10 each but saved me lots of heartache and back ache. The old Firestone whitewall tires had been on the car for no telling how long and had bad weather cracks. Anybody want them free if you pick them up in Red Oak, TX.

Re: New Tires
Will need to be replacing mine, what did you pay for the new set, and where did you purchase them? Are they 19" or 21"?

Re: New Tires
I had the same problem removing very old tires, 21 inch. You can break the beads by running over the tires with a heavy vehicle. I used my 2016 Chevy 2500 pickup. The wheels need to be refinished so I was not to worried about them. I then cut the tires through in one place with a reciprocating electric saw with a metal cutting blade while holding the bead away from the rim so that I would not damage the rim. The tires went to the dump.
When installing the new tires, I pried both beads onto the rim at the same time with the tube installed. Less chance of damaging the tube that way.

Re: New Tires
$96.00 for the 19"black wall.....A silvertown white wall will set you back $312.00 each......But the car would not look the same without the white wall....Why such a difference I wonder? I don't see excelsior offering the white walls, maybe they should?

Re: New Tires
excelsior is the cheapest tire out there- maybe that is why they dont offer the ww.
no frills............. Yes Jeff, thought the same. not sure why I didnt order a 2nd or 3rd set yet, but I guess I wtd to see what I bought first. Still havent run them, though I did mount them. soap is your friend.......... for mounting. I used dawn on the bead and a world of difference. |

Re: New Tires
When I mounted my new tires I lubricated them with Murphy's Oil Soap. Very slippery and washes off with water. Just don't kick the bottle over on the garage floor. Again, very slippery. Don't ask me how I know.

Re: New Tires
Since the 1980s I have been running Universal Tires exclusively on my Model A's. Sadly, Universal Tire is no longer in business. However, I hear that Universal Tires are being made and sold by another company. Who might that be?

Re: New Tires
Bob, I thought Coker now owns Universal. Coker owns 70% of the antique tire mkt.

Re: New Tires
Both Coker and Universal are owned by the same company and operate as stand alone companies from what I gather.
