Default Take a trip through Flathead caves

I just bought one of those cheap ($16 delivered) optic cable cameras that works with Android or laptops.

Thought you might enjoy a trip through a block I will be taking for an hot tank treatment. You will enter the driver water pump hole and meander toward the rear. No wonder these tend to warm up if not cleaned up properly. The last two are down from the head surface.

Cool photos! However I have had blocks hot tanked (the the same blocks had been rebuilt at least once before) and they still look similar to this inside after. It is just unbelievable the amount of stuff you can get out of one of these blocks even after multiple previous cleanings!!!

This is my blower motor that I have been trying to clean in the car for some time. I have posted pics before of all the crap I got out of it already. It had been shake and baked before building. I still have what appears to be hardened sand, rust patches in the block. I can take a steel rod and hammer chunks out of it. The engine is coming out and going to be soaked also.

The machinist guarantees a block clean enough to eat out of at a cost of $80 each. We'll see.

Be interesting to see how it works out. Most cleaning methods do little to get at the casting sand and wire left in the blocks.

Interesting pictures and a great application for one of those gizmos. At the price, I'm thinking why should I not have one. There must be plenty of auto related applications.

I have a camera I use to check cylinder walls and valves (amoung other things). However it was a little on the pricy side, around $200 I think. That camera seems to take great pictures and the price is outstanding! Any idea what the diameter of the camera head is? That was the problem I ran into when I was looking, all the cheaper ones were too large in dia.

As I recall you can get them at Harbor Freight and they are not too pricey.

I got mine here
https://www.cellrizon.com/collection...s-dash-cameras
choices for iPhone or android
Dia. of head is 5/16"
Neat pics Kurt

These pics show just some of the junk I got out of my blower motor after it had been bake and shakes and before pics in my post 5 here. I took the jar of crap back to the parts store that did the work and the new manager of the chain said that he doubted they really did do the bake and would do it again for free. Of course the engine has to come out. (almost done)

I would think that much crud could have been seen while assembling the engine if it was there at that time.

As I posted before, blocks that have been through Ford authorized rebuild several times and then taken apart and tanked by me still have a large amount of crud in them. It takes a lot of extra effort to get the core sand and wire out of the blocks. You can normally get a coffee can of junk out of there.
And acid is not going to desolve casting sand.

Fordy, I'm not passing judgement on your knowledge. Your post just reads like it wasn't cleaned before assembly. Excuse me if i misinterpreted.

JSeery - you sure are right about it taking a long time. I did that crap-ectomy while the engine was in the car. Took heads off and bought a sewer snake cut into adequate lengths to reach into the abyss hooked up to a drill. Being in my garage I couldn't hose it out so had to use a small head magnet want to get the chunks out. Mostly from back 1/2 if the block. 4 hrs effort on each side. Maybe when I get the engine out and on the stand I can get more aggressive.

40Cpe,

You are sure right about that and I'm pretty sure the Manager recognized that also. I plan on taking my camera with me when I take blocks in and show them what I expect to be cleaned out. Thanks to all for the comments. I appreciate it and learn so much here. Much of my learning curves are straight up. LOL
