Temperature gauge??????
Guys, I need a quality temp gauge for my 36 engine in my 33 car. Water pump probe outlet. Anyone bought a gauge/probe lately? Source? Will have to put in glove box, will not alter original dash. Thoughts?
Thanks |

Re: Temperature gauge??????
Here's the gauge that I used on my '34 - SMITHS DUAL GAUGE - Made in England - Mechanical & Turnkey - screwed right in to my water pump and the block for oil pressure. Installed into a two inch cup and strapped to my steering column. It almost looks as though it belongs. Google SMITHS DUAL GAUGE or search for them on eBay.

Re: Temperature gauge??????
There is a probe type temperature gauge sold by Grainger. The gauge has a 10 ft lead with a small sensor at the end that slips into the upper radiator hose and should not leak but may need a dab of RTV if it does. The part # is 5XL18. I haven't checked in a while to see if still available. The cost was under 30.00 last time I checked.

Re: Temperature gauge??????
I bought a set of 3- 1&1/2" face gauges off ebay. whittled off the amp gauge and mounted them in my glovebox so you dont see them unless you open the door. angled to me in the drivers seat. Now I have a reliable mechanical oil pressure gauge and temp with a sensor that goes into a fabbed aluminum section(also on ebay) in my upper radiator hose so my thermometer reads on the dash and the real temp gauge in the glove box tells me true.
Still have room in the glove box for stuff too! |

Re: Temperature gauge??????
Petehoovie, I have the same Smiths mechanical dual gauge mounted in my 34 ford in a mounting panel and it does not look quite so agricultural as your column mount. These Smiths gauges are very accurate and consistent. They were original equipment in MGs and other English sports cars. Fairly pricey these days. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Temperature gauge??????
I have the same Smiths gauge. . . in my MG Midget. Sadly, the temp sender long ago lost its ether so it only gives oil pressure.

Re: Temperature gauge??????
I'm not sure, It is not pipe thread. It is either 1/2" 20 or 9/16".
There are also standard adaptors made to adapt to other gauge senders. Some of these adaptors come with generic gauges or can be bought at Napa. I have used cheap generic gauges to fix the original Ford gauges. Coil up the lower end of the tube around the bulb end. Put it in water and then freeze it in your freezer. Figure out how long the tube needs to be and cut it of clean. Cut the original gauge tube off about 3"s from the gauge. Clean both ends and tin being careful not to get solder inside. Make a small brass coupling, put a thin coating of flux on the tube. using only the tined solder just heat the ends of the coupling to make the joint. Thaw out the bulb. The freezing pulls all the expandable alcohol into the bulb. G.M.l

Re: Temperature gauge??????
On '40s I've used the Equus mechanical gauge sold by O'Reilley's or Auto Zone. With an adapter it should fit into the 36 water pump. You can buy them for less than $20. Mount the gauge in the passenger side cowl panel and you can hide the excess tubing behind the panel. You can see the gauge from the driver's seat. Also check e-Bay for gauges as there's some good buys on there for mechanical gauges.

Re: Temperature gauge??????
i have a Stuart Worner temp and oil gauge in my 36, they are under the dash, on the left side if the calumb, i dont know why more people do this. i did not or alter the dash at all. the gauges saved my motor , i only had 7 lbs oil pressure and the temp was only 100 deg.

Re: Temperature gauge??????
Well in the last six months on both my 39 coupe and my 51 f1 truck I have fitted
a mechanical temp gauge ....both are Smiths made in u.k and look period and are very accurate and both were bought used in the U.K on EBay . Because they are English going into an American engine I needed a reducer thread fitting, both again from EBay and the sizes are 3/8 NPT to 5/8 UNF,both fitted and working great. I was thinking of having them in the glove box but I need to see what's going on without keep dropping the lid . Good luck......Jim. |

Re: Temperature gauge??????
Oh I forgot to mention ,the bulb goes into the head beside the rad hose so possibly the reducer will not be the one for you .
