title question

I'm trying to sell my last car that I own to keep going in life I have a guy that wants it but now he wants a copy of the title faxed to him

couple problems with doing it its not in my name yet and it is a open title and it is older then 10 years old I thought the D.N.V. only keep them up to 10 year on file

so if I fax a title he could go and bond a new title

I just don't trust the guy very good he keep asking for more

he is from Chicago Illinois area I got burnt from a guy around there sent money for a deck lid and never got it or my money back

When things get to fishy...they usually are...trust your gut feelings.
You gave him the vin number already ?
Otherwise cross out some and draw a x over the title before faxing it.

minnesota keeps records of LICENSED vehicles for 7 years. if license has not been renewed in that time, the records go away. if you have the title or an old license receipt in YOUR NAME , you can get a new title and plates. if not, you start over as though you never owned it. in this case with the title never having been transferred, they will still transfer it to you, or him, but i agree, get the money first

I sent him a copy of it but he said he could not read it very good

just found out he is 79 years old he might be ok

It is not legal to sell a car with an open title.

" Title Skipping " is usually done to avoid paying sales tax.

You have to close the title out by transferring it into your name and getting
a new title - which should have been done when you bought the car.

Don't mean to offend - but ....

Someone in another state would have to be nuts to buy an out of state
vehicle with an open title - they are legally buying from the last legal
owner of record in the system - which is not you.

A duplicate title could have been issued after the date of your title
issue & closed on - you won't know until you go to transfer the title.

I never knew how lucky I was when I bought my pickup. Unknown to me at the time, it had an "open title" from the previous owner. Luckily the DMV here (Alaska) took the CA Pink without question.

Yes I know that I can't put in my name cause I have ins on it but if just a body now and it takes 60 to 90 days to get it back

I will agree with "cas3" that obtaining a duplicate title is in Minnesota is not impossible if you have the proper information. In the early '60's, I built a "T" bucket out of a bunch of miscellaneous parts and was able to title it as a "Homebuilt" auto. After about five years, some "miscreants" broke into the storage area in which it was stored. They stole everything that they could unbolt, leaving me with only the frame and front suspension. Also, during this time, I got divorced, and any paper work (Title, etc.) I had for the car mysteriously disappeared. A few years ago, after dragging the remains around for over 40 years, I decided I would try to resurrect it. I had the original VIN (issued by the state), some pictures of the original car, and after I provided an affidavit of the circumstances, I was able to obtain a duplicate title. All is well and I am well on the way to reconstructing my original "Hot Rod". Suffice it to say, I am a "Happy Camper".

The one thing that is important here, is that you find a "Deputy Registrar" that is large enough to have someone that knows all of the procedures. The first two I went to were long on dumb looks and short on real information. When I went to the largest one I could find that was close, there was a woman there that really knew her stuff. After I explained my situation, she "said "OK, we can handle that" and gave me a form that had instructions about what to do and how to do it. I filled it out, took it back (I didn't need the photos, BTW), and voila'! I had a duplicate 1966 title (I like that) and a ""collector Car" plate.

if I was going to keep it I would transfer it into my name but as of right know I need to sell it to keep going with life as I cant work and need the money I don't have the money to put it in my name or can I put in my name right now

There is a high possibility of fraud here.
out of state buyers who want copies of paperwork and then to ship the car, well it is the same way a lot of scammer stories start.

Sorry you are having "life problems" but this quick way out may cause you more heartache, pain, and loss if you are not careful.

Hate to ad problems but how do you know he is 79?
Get the money, then give him the title you have.
If you feel like you are going to be screwed, you probably would be.

Selling and buying has always been for me, Money first, title and keys.

When I've shipped, cars on the trailer and I fedex the spare keys and title certified delivery and signature required.

Sometimes it's better to walk away from a buyer, or a seller for that matter.

Please be VERY careful with this. I agree with the other posters. You have no way of knowing if he is REALLY 79 or whatever.

Personally I would want the title to be in the name of the seller or at least a family member. I'd be a skeptical buyer.

Walk from it and get a title in your name.
