'32 rear quarter fender stud replacement
I recently acquired an original '32 roadster basket case. The body is very nice, but had some minor modification back in the day to be a "proper" hot rod. One of these was to grind off the 3 studs located at the back of the rear wheelwell. The heads are still there. My questions - what's the best way to replace those studs? Were the originals spot welded or swaged in place? What is the best source for the correct studs?
Thanks for the help!! |

Re: '32 rear quarter fender stud replacement
I would drill and tap the remains of the original studs. Screw in some all thread and weld the end to the old stud end. I would do in on the inside of the trunk.

Re: '32 rear quarter fender stud replacement
If the head of the stud is still on the inside, do as Andy suggests. I have fixed these many times like that, be sure to center the hole and drill from the inside. If you run a non cad plated bolt in from the back and cut it off with a zip wheel you will get a better and safer (no cad fumes) weld then if you use all thread which is usually plated.

Re: '32 rear quarter fender stud replacement
If I was going this repair in the way Andy and deuce_roadster suggest, I would consider a stud in place of all-thread. Most all-thread is fairly weak and has sloppy threads as compared to a high quality stud.
Edit: Reread deuse_roadster comment, he was suggestion a bolt and not all-thread, which sounds better to me, so high quality stud or a bolt. Last edited by JSeery; 10-27-2014 at 02:26 PM. |

Re: '32 rear quarter fender stud replacement
The studs as you call them are similar to carriage bolts with a thin head. There are three small spot welds, sheet metal to underside of the head to hold them in place. I think Roy has accurate replacements available. Installing replacements may be easier that drilling and tapping which may render marginal results.
Just checked Roy's catalog, see page 55 R-610-A Rear fender (wheelhouse) weld studs for 1932 (4 pcs/pkg) $ 4.50/pkg Last edited by BoxCar Tom; 10-27-2014 at 04:23 PM. |
