Engine Oil Drain Plug
Can anyone tell me what thread size is on the oil drain plug? I just drained the oil and went to put the plug back in and it would not tighten so, I took it back out and the threads on the plug were almost all gone! (repo) The threads in the pan look okay and I thought I would chase them with a tap first and install a new plug. My thread pitch gauge says 24 TPI and I am guessing it is 3/4" X 24 TPI. Hope this can be verified. Thanks!

Re: Engine Oil Drain Plug
New 3/4"X24 drain plugs are available at any of the vendors for a few bucks.

Re: Engine Oil Drain Plug
I have ordered a new drain plug. My question is what is the thread size so I can chase the threads in the pan with a tap.
Thanks |

Re: Engine Oil Drain Plug
This is what I use:
Magnetic Oil Drain Plug: Same as the regular oil drain plug except it has a magnet to grab any foreign metal objects floating in the oil that can cause damage. U.S.A. A-6730-M $3.75 / ea. (From Snyder's Catalog)

Re: Engine Oil Drain Plug
Depends if it is a 28 or 29-31 oil pan.

Re: Engine Oil Drain Plug
You could use a plumber's brush or some such round wire brush to clean the threads. I'm usually not a fan of using a tap because it might remove good metal. You could also use the thread gauge and just spin it around the threads to see if it pulls out some stipped thread. A fine pick such as a dental pick could also be used.

Re: Engine Oil Drain Plug
The wrench size for it is 15/16", Yes?
I mean for the new plug you can buy 3/4 24 thread. |

Re: Engine Oil Drain Plug
If I’m reading this correctly, it looks like tin is a major component of Babbitt. I’m thinking that a magnet will not attract fragments very well. Others may disagree. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babbit...y)?wprov=sfti1 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
