Default Woven vs Molded

I'm replacing the rear brakes on my '31 coupe and the old shoes are the woven type. I have an extra set of shoes that are the molded type but was wondering if they could be used with steel drums.

Thanks.

They can be used, but you may not like the results. The molded linings are usually harder material, and will have less friction than the woven. Do a search on this site and you will find plenty of discussion on the subject.

I agree with 2manycars. I have never had any luck using the molded brake shoes with original type Model A mechanical brakes. Buy the woven linings. If the old brake shoe linings are grease and oil soaked, now would be a good time to replace the rear axle seals BEFORE you install the new linings or your new linings will be ruined in a few hundred miles.

By late 31 Ford had changed to molded linings and was selling molded as service replacements.

As always, you must arc the shoes to match the drums and center the shoes. Without knowing if the brakes are properly done you will not know if any problems are from the lining or the installation.

It is also important to be sure the steel drums are not too large to be effective.
