Re: title question
It my belief that Minnesota tosses all the old title history after something like 10 years but retains the title information from the last owner that actually had the vehicle licensed. I ran into this when I purchased my truck and wanted to trace its history. In 1999 you could still get that kind of information in MN for a small fee. I'm guessing with the new privacy laws they can't do it now.
You should get the title in your name. Since it hasn't been on the road for years I would think you could value it as a fixer upper or parts car for sales tax purposes. I know I wouldn't be purchasing a car from someone that didn't have the title in their name. |

Re: title question
Sounds to me like this could be a "loose, loose situation.
Best if you title the car and then sell it. Open titles aren't worth the risk when buying a car, in my opinion./ |

Re: title question

Re: title question
I am on the other side of the world from you and don't know/understand your laws. However, after all the time I've been here, I have learnt to trust my 'gut feeling'. Gut feeling comes from our sub- consciousness [which knows!]. Ignore it at your peril!!

Re: title question
My brother sold a car to a fellow who DIDN'T get the new title transferred.
My brother gets periodic notice of parking tickets as the car still is in his name. |

Re: title question
He needs to notify the DMV that the car was sold. Here in Florida too many tickets on a car titled to you will result in the inability to renew your license, it can go to collections and result in liens and a poorer credit rating. There is a form to tell the DMV you no longer own the car here in Florida (HSMV 82050), I'm sure there is one in his state.

Re: title question
In Arizona when you sell a car you go online and report the sale to MV complete with the buyers info.. Then your covered whatever the buyer decides to do down the road.
Sorry for your situation, but skipping title just breeds trouble. Just watch Judge Judy! I've had guys who wanted to buy, sight unseen, full price and even include extra money in their payment so I could give the shipper my credit card number to handle the shipping cost. Couldn't possibly be a scam could it? DUH! |
