Default UPDATE!!!! Stainless Mufflers Question

I have read thru the search about the Ariers Stainless Muffler and see many have received their muffler with dents and bends in it. Would it be better to buy a stainless muffler (Ariers) from Snyders or Brattons rather then from Ariers? I also saw a drawing with four different mufflers but not indicated which one was the original size/type.

I am sure that the Model A Parts Suppliers get no better treatment than do Airies customers. Based on other items I have received that have been shipped from other companies, I suspect that the rigors of shipping is the culprit for dented products.

I just bought mine from Berts or snyders. I can't remember but it came fine with no dents or bends. There is maybe one or two circles indented on the skin of the muffler but I assume that is a spot weld of the inner baffles so I'm ok with it. The drawing you're referring to I believe just shows the different type of aftermarket mufflers that have been produced. I believe the only issue you need to take note of is the 90 deg bend by the front motor mount. The 30/31 have a offset on that bend and the 28/29 have just a straight 90 deg bend. Mikes catalog has a picture of the two I believe. Hope that helped.

That will happen if the tail pipe clamp is tight.

I personally think the problem is exaggerated. I have now purchased three and not a dent on two and the third a dent the size of a dime. I think the shipper is the secret to success. Very simple, If you get one that is damaged, return it. Wayne

I paid Aries extra for that! (150B).

The fuzzy, rattly oversized muffler clamp does not work for me. Buy one and see how long the fuzz lasts ... and how long you can put up with the rattle!

I have a S/S muffler on my '30 for about 7K miles.

I like it but do not see the need to have a polished muffler.

As stated before, the oversize rear clamp is not good. I wore out 2 fuzzys before I made my own flexible rear clamp. Now everything is nice and quiet.

Just my experience and opinion.

I want to thank everyone who responded to my questions. I have in fact bought a Aries Stainless Muffler from Brattons. I received in two days from ordering and in one piece with no dents. It was shipped via UPS. I am not happy with the shine that it has on it and have already used a RED Scotch pad on it to get the luster down some.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions.

I bought an Aries muffler (scratch and dent) for a very reasonable price several years ago and I couldn't tell what was wrong with it, there were no dents that I could find.

I had a Beaver stainless muffler for several years that worked fine, but I changed it for an Aries regular steel muffler because I didn't like the sound of the Beaver, which didn't seem to me to be the real Model A sound. After all that, the Aries sounds exactly the same. Oh well. The Beaver I had was a replacement. The first one had arrived dented and I returned it.

Well yesterday I installed my NEW STAINLESS ARIES MUFFLER. Today I went for a ride to see how it was going to be and as someone said "watch out for the rattles". Well I have a rattle BUT very happy with the product and the sound. I'm thinking I will have to put a non original clamp on the back to take care of the rattle.

I think the reason for SS is not the shine, but the anti corrosion qualities. I had a steel Aires that rusted out in maybe 18,000 miles. Looking back, I wasn't running a thermostat at that time and did winter driving shorter trips. This produces more water, that doesn't get vaporized as good, and ends up gook in the vent tube, as well as lying in the muffler, creating rust.
I used the oversize hanger on my SS Aires, with a strip of welding cloth between the the clamp and hanger. Has been good for over 10,000 miles.
PS : I scuffed and painted the muffler with high heat paint.

A trick we used to use on our mufflers in the UK back in the 60's was to drill a line of 3/16 holes along the underside of the muffler to allow excess water to drain.

Years ago mufflers came w/a drain hole in them. I always drill a 1/8" hole at the lowest point in the mufflers of our vehicles. Which reminds me, I gotta do that to the 2015 Jeep we bought a few weeks ago.

No you don't. Your 2015 Jeep has a stainless muffler and should already have a drain hole or syphon tube if it needs one. (I used to design OEM mufflers, including Jeep stuff back in the late '90s)

18,000 miles mean nothing. Did you put those miles on in 1, 10 or 20 years. Wayne.
