Default ammeter wiring 1937 ford

I am re-wiring a 1937 ford 1-1/2 ton with a cast iron head 85 horse flathead. System remains 6 volt positive ground. My question is pertaining to the wire from the generator back to the battery. Does this connection have to be after the ammeter in order to register charge on the dash or can it go straight to the battery?

The ammeter has to be between the generator and the battery. It is looking at the current flow between the generator (and the rest of the system) and the battery. Positive and negative on the meter indicates current flow between the generator and the battery. The amount of needle deflection is the amount of current flow.

The stud on the battery side of the fuse is where the generator connection should be made. It is the connection point for both the generator and the battery power (and any other non-fused circuits). The ammeter goes between this stud and the battery connection.
