Default Merc-o-matic linkage

I'm swapping my 6 and 3speed in my 54 custom line for a 312 and merc-o-matic out of a 57 mercury. The problem is, I don't know how the linkage should look like at all, the merc was push-button operated. On the transmission it is two arms on the same axle, and a hole with something that looks like a cable connection. Do I have to install a push-button panel to operate it, or is it some way to connect it to the three on the tree?

One of the two arms is the gear selector. The other is the throttle control arm (passing gear). The hole? Speedometer cable?

No, it is not the speedometer cable, this one (it is actually 2) is just above the 2 arms, and has an inspection hole or something under, where I can see a rod with tracks on. I tried to move the rod up and down, and it clicks, just like a shifter arm... None of the arms clicks when I move it...

Merc-O-Matic and Ford-O-Matic are the same transmission. You can go to a local used transmission parts dealer and buy the correct gear selctor and kick down shafts. You will need to drop the pan and remove parking rod from the arm inside and the large nut that attaches from the inside. Then both shafts pull out the side. Be sure to replace the chevron seal (looks like a miniature output shaft seal) and the "O" ring seal that fits in the groove between the two shafts.

Sounds more difficult than it is.

I couldn't open the picture; something about it is no longer up. If the hole you refer to is on a boss and does not enter the transmisson cavity, it's probably just a securing point ofr the speedometer cable as Y-Block said.

Good luck, Motorhead
