Default noisy engine

Hi All,
What is a good additive to calm a noisy engine that runs great but has a little noise to it. The car is a 1956 Ford V8.

ANY AND ALL HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Thanks,
Joe D

thats a very loaded question? First you need to determine whats making the noise and repair the problem. There is no majic fluid the fixes engine. Frank

Frank is correct. Find out what it is or it may not be "that runs great" for very long. have you check the valve lash. Y-Block Fords had solid lifters and if not adjusted occasionally will get pretty noisy.

My '55 V8 had a banging noise on startup that would quiet down while driving...turned out to be flex plate rivets were loose. New improved light weight replacement flex plate from Tee-Bird Products cured that problem.

I was going to say, the first "additive" I would try on a noisy Y-Block is a big can of valve lash adjustment.

A big can of valve lash may fix it, but it may need more. Run the motor warm with the rocker covers off to see if you have oil coming out the little pipe on the right end of each side. If not, dont wast time adjusting things, you need to go deeper. If you have a good supply of oil, and it has been making noise a long time, chances are there is a groove worn in each rocker arm. That will make it nearly impossible to get an accurate adjustment. The book calls for .019. You can adjust them to .016 to try and take up some of the play. Any less may not be safe.

I always get a chuckle when someone answers a 8 month old thread and others add to it.... Just saying.

Thumbs up Re: noisy engine

My 56 Merc also had a noise at idle when started. Originally was told that it was the Torque Convertor lacking oil. After investigating, found that it was the Rivets holding the "fingers" on the Flex Plate. Took the Flex Plate to an Engineering Shop where they tightened the Rivets. Noise now gone.
