1953 Mercury Monterey gas tank?
A friend of mine stopped by yesterday, and asked if I knew of a fuel tank that would fit 1953 Mercury Monterey. He tried online search, but nothing is showing up for that year/model. Tank is pretty rotten, think Northern Ontario and salt, so rebuild of original will be quite consuming. |

I know that Mustang tanks are commonly used in "shoebox" Fords. That might be something worth pursuing.

Re: 1953 Mercury Monterey gas tank?
I have one here from a 53 Meteor Customline that I'm planning to try in my 52 Merc. It is a bit shorter than the original Mercury tank so I guess it will take some modification.

Re: 1953 Mercury Monterey gas tank?
In the '54 Merc that I owned I used the tank from a '57 Merc. Why they make a tank for a '57 Merc and not the 52-54 tank is anybody's guess. The '57 tank is deeper so you need to lengthen the holding straps by about 3-4 inches. The neck of the tank needs to be relocated (tipped)downward and re-soldered to line up with the hole in the back panel. Most of these thanks that I have seen are rotted on top as the felt pads that are between the tank and trunk pan retain water.

Occasionally you can find a decent used one from the more arid western US locations. I've seen the 52/54 Ford passenger car tanks on flea-pay but they are over $300 US. This is a link from flea-pay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Gas-Fuel-ta...IAAOSwXVNbWc5d
They are similar but I don't know how close. This link has a few picks of the Mercury tank. https://fordrestorationandparts.com/...cury-fuel-tank |

Re: 1953 Mercury Monterey gas tank?
Yes, that is why the Meteor tank I have here is shorter than the original in my 52 Merc. The Meteors were more Ford than Mercury. This Meteor tank is still in the box that the new one came in.. I'll check for a name on the box. Maybe they make Mercury sized tanks too.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll likely be meeting up with my buddy next week, and we can go over some of these.

I don’t remember who told me but I’ve heard that the 55 ford is a similar tank to the mercury. It was an older gentleman who sold Mercury parts. He sold out his business a few years ago however.
