You can get a repro 17 tooth nylon gear from Brattons Antique Auto. You would most likely need a #18 turtle housing for the #17 gear to work properly.

The more the teeth on the driven gear, the larger diameter of the gear. The different housings set the axis of the gear at the right height to engage the worm gear on the drive shaft. From experience, if you put the 17 tooth gear in anything bigger than an 18 turtle housing the teeth will skip and quickly wear out. I went from 3.78 rear end to 3.25 and had to use the 18 housing with the Braxton 17 tooth gear. They do not make a housing specifically for 17 tooth gears, but the 18 housing is working fine now.

If any difference, it'll be the difference in dimension between the radius where it mounts on the torque tube, and the centerline of the pin that the gear turns on. Remember that the outside diameter of some of these gears change as the tooth count changes. A "20" housing MAY hold a "17" gear's teeth too far away from the driven gear to mesh properly. That's why the housings are numbered to begin with. DD

drolston & coopman gave you the details. I have also read posts here where some have machined the housing mounting radius, on higher numbered turtle housings, to allow smaller diameter tooth gears to mesh with the gear on the drive shaft.

Here's the url to Brattons Antique Auto online catalog listing for speedometer gears, housings, etc.

You might check with barnfind08 here on the Barn. Fred has a ton of NOS stuff.

Mac's speedometer housing does not have the cast "18" marking, but it is an 18.

Speedometer Gear Case Housing - Ford Passenger

I put mine on without the gasket to get the driven gear a little closer to the worm gear. Hasn't leaked so far.

The gasket probably does more to keep crud out than to keep oil in. It think it is immaterial the way most of us drive our old Ford cars on good roads on nice days.
