plug question
I need to know if I am right or something else is wrong, like mixture. I pulled the plugs to clean them (stock champions). I have a 5.5 Snyders head and love it. Anyhow, I pulled them and the cermic tip was a light brown while the metal portion of the plug had caked on carbon. I cleaned them up on the while wheel and put them back in. Question-do I need a hotter plug or the mixture to rich?
Mike

Re: plug question
the tan part means the air fuel mixture is fine, the black carbon usually means your engine is burning a little oil, going up one heat range might help with the carbon, but unless the engine mis fires on your trips i wouldnt worry about it

Re: plug question
If your plug gap is at the normal .035", try reducing it to .030" for the 5.5 head and recheck plugs after a few hundred miles.

Re: plug question
Don't use a wire wheel on plugs---metal can transfer to the ceramic and make it conductive.
It is normal to have some carbon flakes on the shell, the light brown on the ceramic center electrode shows you are close to correct mixture. Gooey black carbon ---shiney black coating could be oil If I drive with the GAV closed I can burn the plugs white(3X) ---I don't bother with removal for cleaning --20 miles up the parkway at 65 and they are clean. --flat(not shiney) dry black flakes on the steel shell are normal |
