Default 53 Ford v8 fuel pump rod

I have a 53 Ford Customline v8 and took off the fuel pump to clean and inspect it.
I did not notice that the rod was different on each end.
Does the end with the 2 grooves go into the engine?
I do not have a picture of it at this time.
Any help is appreciated
