Default What oil filter?

I have a '61' Galaxie with a 292ci. It appears to have an oil filter adapter on the engine instead of a canister. Would anybody know what filter number would be used on this application. Any make and number would be good as I could cross reference for my choice. I can only read a portion of the ID on the filter that is there now. As always, thank you for your time.

I wouldn't use a Fram on a lawnmower. You can cross that number over to a better brand like Wix or Purolator. And, yes, you should use an oil with high zinc and phosphorus content.

Yes, a high zddp oil or a zinc/phosphorus additive is highly recommended for solid lifter engines like the y-blocks.
See this link...
https://www.ctci.org/gilsgarage/EngineOil.php

If the engine has been sitting for a while or has old / unknown oil in it a fresh change of new high detergent oil may get dirty quickly or have unintended consequences.

Motorcraft (FORD) FL-1A Walmart has them for around $4.00.

I agree with Dobie on the filter. use a wix, or A/C delco if you can find one. I usually end up wit a wix filter. the Napa gold filter is made by wix. I actually prefer Fleetguard if I can get them, but no one near me carries them. I used to work for the State of Alaska D.O.T. and they did a test back in the late '90's and the results showed that the fleetguard was best, followed by Wix, then A/C Delco. I do not know the details of the testing, only the published report. just my opinion, and everyone has their own.

The book calls for a FL1. They are so big, it is a bear to get them in. A newer filter is an FL400. It has a smaller diameter and will slide in with one hand and screw right on. About the same price usually. Always wipe the surface of the adapter clean, and oil the gasket on the filter, then just tighten it by hand.

I will agree with using the Motorcraft filters. they are very good also. I do use them when I cannot get a wix for my 30 model A with the Y -Block. I should have included that with my other post.-----Jim.

Anything but Fram. Wix; Puralator, AC are good. Definitely add zinc

Might as well get the Ford label diesel engine oil while you are there. It's fairly cheap and one of the few left with zddp. Rotella was reformulated and doesn't have it.

Rotella was reformulated?
How long ago? I have some sorta dusty unopened gallon jugs I bought a while back. How can I tell for sure if I've got the old or new?

I use Motorcraft synthetic blend 5-30 in my everyday driver off brand P/u. I get it at Walmart because it is where I can get the best buy on it . I do like the motorcraft oil, I have been using it since the '90's in several of my cars. I also have been using rotella in my '51 Merc. with the flathead. I had a good stock of it built up , and I am just about out . I have had this oil stock piled for about 8 years. I will be looking for something different for the Merc. after the next oil change , since rotella is not quite the same as it used to be.

Not sure, seems like 2-3 years ago I first heard it. I've heard it from several sources but in an internet search, can't seem to substantiate.

What Rotella were you sing. If the 15-40 diesel oil, they did lower the ZDDP a bit, but it still has 1100 of ZDDP, much more than any flathead or YBlock ever required.

WRONG - the Rotella 15-40 diesel still has about 1100 PPM of ZDDP. It was lowered a bit about 3 or 4 years ago (had a bout 1300 to 1500)but still has way more than a stock YBlock requires.
