Default Engine Knock undet load

I am looking into buying a 1930 tudor. The engine knocks quite loudly under a load, like doing uphill grade. Are there minor things to look for or is it more serious?

Appreciate your input,

Jack

Likely a Center Main bearing is too loose. You might confirm it by retarding the spark and see if the noise goes away. Generally this symptom means the engine is "terminal" however maybe not. Better budget as it is though............

When you put it together, don't forget the dowel pin retaining ring.

I was going to say the same as Brent.

I know from experience on my 29 Tudor.

30tudor, that is a retainer plate, not a ring. Bob

If you are luck it is a knocking oil pump or maybe a wrist pin.

I agree with Tudor it is shaped like a ring, not a plate. The parts lists just call it a retainer.

Can you get it make this noise while the car is setting still ?? If so, it may be easier to figure out what it is if you know where it is.. With the hood open try varying the engine speed, the spark lever position and removing some plug wires/strips..

Had a dull knock in the engine for the delivery. never had it under load. Since it was just in the chassis I pulled it out and looked things over, very loose worn out engine, no shims left and .012 wear in the cyls on average. It would have been ternnal if I had driven it that way for very long. Rod

I will try various conditions and catalog exactly what is going on during the knocking. Speed, spark, condition ( setting still, different speeds, removing wires)

Thanks for all of the feed back

Jack
