Re: back up camara
How about a switch that gets activated when you put it in reverse, like a modern back up light switch.

Re: back up camara
You could use a simple cheap mini-toggle switch out of sight but easily accessible under the dash as I have here for my interior lights and electric fuel pump. Get them at Radio Shack.

Re: back up camara
I use this same set up on my dump truck has no hole to look out of rear view mirror. I have mine all the time hooked up to switched power and use it as my rear view camera in the dump. Works really well for the last 5 years

Re: back up camara
Has anyone done this sort of thing and tied it to your turn signal switch? When I re-do my '40 Sedan Delivery I thought about putting in such a system because lane changing in that thing is a real adventure. It is like driving a cave. I might just have to leave it on all the time like flatbed has done.

Expavr
Very nice. Extra attention to detail. I like the oil cups for the shift rails. Bruce

Re: back up camara
The simplest and easiest way to do it is with a toggle switch or a separate switch (lever type switch) mounted so it is activated with the reverse lever of the linkage.

Re: back up camara
Don't really understand the need to have the camera operate only while in reverse. It functions as a rear view mirror and the mirror doesn't get shut off.
Perhaps a consideration for those who are still operating on 6 volts would be a need for a 12 volt power source. And then for those who don't buy Chinese, 'fo-ged-a-bod-it'

Re: back up camara
A 12 volt power source is no issue on a 6v car. I have on several 6v cars hidden the little module in the link below under the dash to make the cigar lighter 12v to run a GPS or charge a cell phone.

Re: back up camara
Metra electronics, Hollyhill florida, sells a device that will switch the video signal from up to four cameras to your screen. It is triggered by a 12+dc input and can be wired to reverse light right/left turn signals etc.

Re: back up camara
The shift rail switch or steering column add on turn signal switch seem like the way to go. Wiring a reverse camera on all the with the ignition switch will shorten it's life span a bit.

Re: back up camara
IMHO, I would hook it up to a seperate manualy activated switch so that you can turn it on any time that you wanted/needed. If you have trouble seeing out of the right side, I would position the camera at a slight angle to view the right lane & this would be a big help in viewing traffic when you want to change lanes. Add a dimmer switch to the floor board? GM used to do it for the wonderbar radio.

Re: back up camara
You know when we were younger driving these cars it wasn't as hard, but now with our bad backs, knees, necks, eyes, etc using some of the modern conveniences is necessary so we can continue to enjoy them - don't you agree?

Re: back up camara
This thread started me thinking about a camera. Due to a industrial accident 19 years ago I have lost most of my vision in my right eye. I have been able to keep my CDL but have to have yearly eye exams. DMV requires that I only drive vehicles with both outside mirrors. Modern vehicles are no problem of course as all come equiped that way anymore, but even the mirrors that can be installed on the right side of our antique vehicles are so small that you don't have a really good view of that lane. A small camera would be inconspicious & a great safety addition. After all I don't want to cause anybody any accidents, get anybody injured/ killed, or wreck my old cars. Bill

Re: back up camara
you should see me trying to back up or change lanes in my chopped and channeled '30 coupe with no side mirrors. It does have an inside rear view mirror, but major blind spots. plan on getting at least one for the next driving season. our driving season is almost over up here.

Re: back up camara
I'm using an 84 F150 trans and it has a backup light sw built in, works great. However I think I will add an over ride sw so I can use it anytime I might need it.

Re: back up camara
Sony makes a radio with a 5 or 6 inch diagonal touchscreen that can operate as a display for an optional backup camera. We put one on the 39 because of the poor rearward visibility. The camera is perhaps 5/8" dia and is mounted in the bumper guard. For the radio, I cant stand modern radios in an old car so we installed the radio in an aftermarket heater under the dash....open the heater doors and there is the display. Since we don't listen to radio in the 39, the backup camera stays on all the time......great for backing up, viewing idiots tailgating you, etc.
