If I remember correctly, the higher the hinges are positioned on the cowl, the lower the hood sits on the cowl. a trick, when removing the hinges that are correctly positioned , drill two tiny holes thru the hinges and into to cowl. then reassemble and align the two drilled holes and the hinges are in the exact position as before.

I don't know if this will help but this is the hinge on my 41. It should be the early style as I have the 3 piece fenders although it's a Canadian Ford.

Looking at Fibber Mcgees set up, Mine has the hinges attached to the side of the cowl with the nuts on the inside under the dash. Also the arm/sprin s are attached to the hinge ass'y. Did you use the wave washers on the bolts into the hood. I had sort of the same problem after I painted my '41 except my hood spread out at the cowl. After literally years messing with it I removed the arm/spring and bingo , it fit perfectly at the cowl. Now I use a fold down prop rod as on a new car.

well I got it to fit but I had to lower the fenders and the grill like if they weren't on the car then fit the fenders to the hood that's todays project. had to bend the two levers on the hinge to make it fit on the sides so it wouldn't look like wings.
