Default Miller-cragar overhead

Anyone know if a Miller Overhead used a flat top piston or a dome popup piston when the heads were first sold. Was the conversion intended to be used with the stock flat top piston and what would the compression have been? Thank you.

I have a Miller OHV on my "B" motor in my 30 sedan. It has flat top pistons as built by Schwalm's Babbitted Bearings in Strasburg Pa. I'm not sure of the compression ratio. If you really need more information give Ora Landis a call at 717-687-6976. Ora is well versed in performance modifications.

I have one on my pickup. It has flat top pistons. The literature I have does not list any pistons special for the head. It was sold by all sorts of dealers and no special pistons were sold. No compression was ever listed in the advertising.

They were originally used with the stock pistons. The advertisement touted to drive your A into the shop and drive it out in 4 hours with double the horsepower, only the head and a larger carb were needed to do this. Millers/Cragars need a LOT of spark advance to produce maximum power. I recommend pistons with half of a dome to promote turbulence in order to cure this need. Don't be afraid of compression, 6,7, or even 8:1 won't hurt anything as long as it doesn't detonate (ping).
