Default 39 ford rear end

I'm finishing up rebuilding the steering gearbox and next will be replacing the inner seals in the rear end. When I took the hubs off one side was full of lube so I have decided to take apart and put new seals in and clean up.

This is my first time ever dealing with this type of set up and was wanting the do's and do not's so it performs like it should.

Any advice and pointers will be very much appreciated.

Here are some links to Tom Endy's articles on Model A rear axles. Although
not exactly the same as yours there is a lot of good general information.

Once you remove the hubs you can Remove the left side housing then remove the whole differential with axles as a unit. Then install new seals and replace the left housing making sure to use the same thickness gasket. If your plan is a total rebuild then that's another story.

Before you slide the axles and differential assembly back in wrap the threads and keyways on the ends of the axles with electrical tape to prevent cutting the new seals.

Or you can slip a short piece of 5/8 heater hose over the threads to protect the seal.

When you take the rear apart to replace the inner axle housing seals, I would suggest a careful inspection of all internal components. Ring and pinion gears, driveshaft and pinion splines, bearings and races, spider gears and cross shaft, carrier housing, axles shafts, etc. Also, while you are replacing axle housing seals, consider replacing the same part number seal at front of torque tube.
