My friends 57 T-Bird's odometer decreases mileage when driving forward and increases mileage when backing up. WHAT IS THE DEAL CAN YOU HELP? THANKS!

Is there anything non original on the car? How long has it been like this and what was the last thing that was done before the problem started? You might have better luck posting this on the "Late V8" forum.

It sounds like he either has a mechanical problem with the unit internally or someone tinkered with it and didn't get it back together correctly. If the speedo keeps correct MPH it's not an external problem with the cable or drive for sure.

I wonder if the tail housing has ever been replaced that may have tranferred the drive cable location from the top to the bottom of the housing or vice versa. Perhaps the gauge has been taken apart and assembled incorrectly.
